Dark matter might consist of particles that interact weakly with ordinary matter, or baryons, and with themselves, and cosmologist Yacine Ali-Haimoud of New York University argues that cosmological observations can test these interactions in ways direct-detection experiments cannot, especially for lighter candidates. Speaking at the Institute for Advanced Study's astrophysics seminar, he lays out two unfinished theoretical projects and explicitly invites collaborators to help complete them. The first extends his Boltzmann-Fokker-Planck formalism, introduced in a 2018 paper, to handle dark matter self-interactions of arbitrary strength and build it into the CLASS Boltzmann code used across cosmology. The second proposes hunting for non-Gaussianity in the Cosmic Microwave Background caused by the non-linear momentum-exchange rate between dark matter and baryons, an approach he connects to earlier work on primordial black holes done with a former student. The talk stays technical throughout, aimed at researchers who already know Boltzmann codes and CMB statistics rather than a general audience.
