Ciprian Bonciocat, a mathematician at Stanford University, presents research joint with Kenneth Blakey on using Floer homotopy theory to bound degenerate Lagrangian intersections. The setting is plumbings of cotangent bundles along a submanifold, a case where classical Floer theory alone cannot pin down intersection numbers because the intersections are degenerate rather than transverse. Bonciocat shows how building a parameterized stable homotopy type, one that keeps track of the auxiliary choices normally discarded in the construction, yields a sharper invariant than the usual Floer homology. The talk is one of three twenty minute research presentations in the IAS/Princeton/Montreal/Paris/Tel Aviv Symplectic Geometry Zoominar, a recurring seminar connecting symplectic geometers across those institutions. It assumes familiarity with Lagrangian intersection theory, Morse and Floer homology, and stable homotopy theory, and moves quickly through definitions to the construction and its strength as an invariant. This is a specialist research seminar talk rather than an introductory lecture, aimed at working symplectic and contact geometers.
