Shengzhen Ning, a mathematician at the University of Minnesota, presents this talk in the joint IAS/Princeton University Symplectic Geometry Seminar, held at the Institute for Advanced Study's Simonyi Hall. The subject is the Gromov width, a symplectic capacity that measures the size of the largest symplectic ball that can be embedded in a closed symplectic manifold, and how sensitive this measurement is to changes in the symplectic form. Ning addresses Problem 46 from McDuff and Salamon's well known problem list, which asks whether cohomologous symplectic forms, forms representing the same cohomology class, can nonetheless have different Gromov widths. He walks through a construction of such examples in dimension six built from dimension four data, adapting an earlier example of deformation inequivalent symplectic forms due to Yongbin Ruan. The talk assumes graduate-level familiarity with symplectic topology and moves through the construction step by step for a specialist seminar audience.
